Only Don’t Know by Jakusho Kwong-roshi
“Only Don’t Know” is one of Kwong Roshi’s instructions to his students about the type of mind they should hold. Kwong Roshi did this Zen Buddhist calligraphy many years ago, and it has become iconic. Kwong Roshi has a very beautiful calligraphic style in both Japanese and English but does the majority of his work in English.
Jakusho Kwong-roshi is a successor in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki-roshi. He has been teaching Zen in the United States and Europe for more than thirty years. He is the founder and abbot of the Sonoma Mountain Zen Center, California.
This was the perfect illustration for an article on the koan tradition in Zen Buddhism Summer 2005.
