Seated GuanyinBodhisattva (Cover Edition)

This seated Guanyin is human-like and very much at ease and displays vajra pride—the powerful proclamation of self-existing enlightenment. Guanyin is the representative of compassion (the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara in Sanskrit) and is at times depicted as male, as female, in a variety of postures, and sometimes with many arms. The original 95” by 65” wooden figure is possibly the best-preserved and most magnificent sculpture from this period of Chinese Buddhist art from the Liao Dynasty (907-1125) in China.

This print is presented with a black background that we created for our use on the cover of the May 2006 issue.
