Commissioned for the January 1993 issue of Shambhala Sun, the first annual teachings issue, this calligraphy was made by Barbara Bash, to go with an article by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi titled "Great Mind is Normal Mind" In the book To Shine One Corner of the World: Moments With Shunryu Suzuki, by Students of Shunryu Suzuki, David Chadwick (Editor), Broadway Books, 2001, the following excerpt describes the occasion when Suzuki Roshi said this:
One morning in the zendo as we were all silently sitting zazen, Susuki Roshi said, "Don't move. Just die over and over. Don't anticipate. Nothing can save you, because this is your last moment. Not even enlightenment will help you now, because you have no other moments. With no future, be true to yourself - and don't move. If you really could die once in your life, then you never die again.
Barbara Bash is a calligrapher, illustrator, author and performance artist. She has written and illustrated many books on natural history for adults and children. She also teaches workshops in illustrated journaling, expressive brush calligraphy, and communication practices.
