"Chenrezig with Wildlife" – Faith Stone

Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of compassion, seamlessly integrates with the natural beauty of the wilderness. Sitting in a contemporary setting, Chenrezig exudes serenity, embodying the compassionate essence that transcends time and space. The focal point of the composition is Chenrezig, depicted with an aura of tranquility and benevolence.

The woodblock technique captures Chenrezig’s compassionate countenance, conveying a timeless sense of spiritual grace. Chenrezig is attended by a doe and fawn to one side, symbolizing the nurturing and protective qualities of compassion, and a red fox on the other. The fox serves as a symbol of adaptability and reminds viewers of the interdependence and interconnectedness of all living beings, spirituality and nature blending seamlessly, viewers invited to connect with the timeless message of compassion in their daily lives.

The making of thangka woodblocks has become rare since the Communist invasion of Tibet and the destruction of the printmaking monasteries. Artist Faith Stone's goal is to preserve and revive the art form. She handprints the woodblock on paper and then paints it with watercolors in the old tradition. Ms. Stone herself uses traditional and contemporary influences in her woodblock creations. She is one of the very few artists still working in the tradition.
