"Buddha Shakyamuni"
Buddha Shakyamuni reprinted courtesy of Wisdom Publications and Schnelowe.
As with so many old thangkas, originally this one had cracks and missing chips of paint. Even with the necessary touch-ups done to be made ready for the cover, it conveys a lot of the character of the original thangka.
The reprint from Wisdom Publications comes from their Tibetan Art Calendar and depicts Buddha Shakyamuni in meditation posture with his right hand in the “touching the earth” gesture, and his left hand resting in his lap. He is flanked by his favorite disciples: Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, and is seen here as the expression of compassion.
Wisdom Publications is dedicated to making available authentic Buddhist works, and was inspired in the 1970s by the late Tibetan Lama Thubten Yeshe. As a nonprofit organization it reinvests all profits into the creation of new works, for the benefit of all. Its titles are distributed worldwide and have been translated into more than thirty foreign languages.
