This beautiful portrait of Pema Chödrön was taken by Ethan Neville for his photojournalistic art project called Stone of Kindness.
How the portrait came to be: “Gampo Abbey: I took the kids up for spring break to see nana, my mother, who had taken temporary ordination for eight months and we had the great fortune of meeting with Pema. I explained what I was doing with these three stones. And she agreed to have a portrait with the Stone of Kindness and the Stone of Conversation.”
Ethan Neville is a multimedia artist who has worked with many different mediums including; furniture making, printmaking, ink and paper, film/video, and photography and installations.

Pema Chödrön is an American Buddhist nun and one of the foremost students of Chögyam Trungpa, the renowned meditation teacher. She is the author of The Wisdom of No Escape, Start Where You Are, and The Places That Scare You, and she is the resident teacher at Gampo Abbey, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, the first Tibetan monastery in North America established for Westerners.
