These calligraphies were done by Thich Nhat Hanh just before a wonderful interview he did in San Diego with our editor-in-chief, Melvin McLeod. He’s one of a very few people who has training in Eastern Art but also has an amazing calligraphic hand in English. He does a lot of Western calligraphy, which you can see in many of his books. Just before the interview, he did these on rice paper, sealed them, and gave them to Melvin. These were such a wonderful gift, but when I opened the package, the art director in me freaked out. They were so large! And such fine ink on transparent paper. But we stood our big scanner on end and somehow managed to capture them. What a lovely result. –Liza Matthews
